Let me extend my warmest congratulations to the graduates of 2016.
Today marks the beginning of your new journey towards success.
The past four or five years of your life in the university have been quite challenging but surely worth remembering; those were the meaningful years of busying yourself towards becoming what you can be.
This very day signals the time has come for you to objectify the things that you have learned from the university by taking part in the society you belong. After all, this is what you were trained to do as forerunners of progress.
I urge you to wear your badge of excellence and determination in all your undertakings. MSU-General Santos has provided you with the right education in order to achieve your goals as individuals as well as members of the community, thereby putting yourself in the helm of success.
Always learn the art of teamwork, for nothing is nobler than being of service for others and for the greater good.
Like those who came before you in the university, you must have your own take of the paradox of life-a strong spirit amidst the challenges of times. They may make your search for life’s meaning more exciting.
I believe you have played your own part in our successes as a university during the past years. I want you to carry those stories of success whatever you do and wherever you may go. They will keep your dreams alive.
Imbibed with its core values of Respect, Integrity, Service, and Excellence, truly, I have never doubted the MSU spirit for global competitiveness.
Last but not least, my deepest appreciation for the inspiration and support of parents and benefactors to the graduates who now embark in their own flagship of success. Today they make you all very proud. Thank you so much.
Again, congratulations and I wish you all the best.
ATTY. ABDURRAHMAN T. CANACAN
Thank you, CHANCELLOR Atty. Abdurrahman T. Canacan for the introduction and the invitation
to be your commencement speaker. I am deeply honored.
MSU SYSTEM PRESIDENT Dr. Habib W. Macaayong, CHANCELLOR Atty. Abdurrahman T.
Canacan, Faculty and Staff, Alumni, dear graduates, family and friends, ladies and gentlemen-
This is the day that the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.
I rejoice with you in celebration of the 38 TH COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES OF MINDANAO STATE
UNIVERSITY GENERAL SANTOS CITY. It is my joy to personally congratulate all of you for a job
I would like to commend MSU Gensan for producing topnotch graduates and excellent
professionals! You made headlines again when KENT MEYLER MALONES SAMARANOS topped
the April 2017 Electrical Engineer R.E.E. Board Exam.
I believe and I declare that the Class of 2017 will also make history by producing more
topnotchers and 100% passers in the licensure exams as well as the Bar Exams.
kahirap maging mahirap.
I value education, but extreme poverty forced me to drop out of school. I decided to leave my
comfort zone because I wanted to help my Nanay Dionisia so that my five siblings and I can
While I was a teenager, I left Mindanao to fulfill my dream of helping my family. I was 16 when I
stepped into the ring for my first professional bout. I won my first fight in four rounds. A lot of
things have happened since then. I have been a boxer for twenty years now.
I firmly believe that GOD’S WAYS ARE HIGHER THAN OUR WAYS. HIS THOUGHTS ARE HIGHER
THAN OUR THOUGHTS. HIS PLANS FOR US ARE TO PROSPER US AND NOT TO HARM US, TO
GIVE US A FUTURE AND A HOPE.
All I wanted is to get out of poverty, but God gave me so much more than I deserve. However,
the overwhelming success in my boxing career caused me to be distracted. I almost had a
When I was deep in sin, there were people who interceded for me. God did not give up on me.
My personal encounter with the Lord enabled me to make a 180 degree turn. The reversal of
my direction was doubted by a lot of people, but I was determined to obey the Lord.
ANO NGA ANG MGA BAGAY NA PWEDE NINYONG MATUTUNAN MULA SA BUHAY NG ISANG

PANGALAWA: ANO MAN ANG KALAGAYAN MO SA BUHAY, PWEDE MONG MAKAMIT ANG
PANGATLO: UMASENSO KA HINDI LANG PARA SA SARILI KUNDI PARA SA PAMILYA AT SA
BAYAN. I learned that real success is not about money. It is about making dreams come true for
yourself AND for others.

GOD BLESSES US THROUGH RELATIONSHIPS.
Let us make it a point to be a blessing to others, too.

Let me ask you again: IS THERE HOPE FOR OUR COUNTRY?
If you said NO, what’s the point of being here? What is the point of living? Mahirap mabuhay
na walang pag-asa. But if you said YES, THEN I AM WITH YOU. Because of hope, we have the
reason to keep on keeping on. We have the reason to do what we are called to do. We cannot
do it on our own.
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DID NOT RESPOND: IT IS TIME TO MAKE UP YOUR MIND. Today, more
than ever, we need men and women who are clear about their values and their convictions.
We need men and women who are not afraid to make a stand.
We need to work together despite our differences. It is important that we learn to listen to
each other. That would be one step for us to foster understanding. However, we have to
believe that there is hope for our country so that we can move forward towards a better
We may disagree on other things, but when it comes to this, we need to be untied in believing
that there is HOPE FOR THE PHILIPPINES.
We are called to be the SALT and LIGHT of this world. People may mock us or laugh at us for
having big dreams for our nation. They may persecute us, or bash us on social media or even in
person. They can do anything they want to put us down, but we will keep the faith and keep
doing what is right. We will fulfill our God-given vision and mission. We will be channels of
blessings and partners for change.
There is so much to be done, so much to be accomplished for our nation. In the midst of all the
tough challenges we face as a people, let us choose to stand firm and strong. Let us be resolute
in the face of obstacles and the threats of terrorism. Let us do what is right and fight for what is
As it is written, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a
harvest if we do not give up.”
With courage and determination, we can face tougher challenges. With faith and hope, we can
surmount higher obstacles. With God’s wisdom and grace, we can overcome greater trials.
In closing, I ENCOURAGE YOU TO KEEP DREAMING BIGGER DREAMS AND KEEP LEARNING NEW
THINGS. Be clear about your values and your convictions. When you act on what you know on
the basis of your values and convictions, you make your dreams come true. In the process, you
will also help others reach for their dreams.
Congratulations to all the graduates and future topnotchers! Congratulations to all the parents,
relatives and loved ones who helped our graduates succeed. Congratulations to all the
professors, faculty and staff for a job well done! Mabuhay, MSU GENSAN!
As we rejoice, let us bring back ALL THE GLORY AND HONOR TO OUR ALMIGHTY GOD!
With Him, all things are possible!
Daghang salamat ug maayong hapon sa tanan!
